Kieran is among my exclusive membership of close confidants. Anything concerning who I'm dating, my career path, my day-to-day outlook and so forth gets run by Kieran in exhaustingly-detailed emails. I then wait eagerly by my computer for his witty and sage perspective.
I was lucky enough to meet him online. In fact, way back in 1996 or 1997, when I got my first computer and online chat rooms were new and more of a novelty, I randomly picked the "Dublin/Ireland" room and there he was--Practically the first person I ever chatted with online. We've been friends ever since.
In 2000 I met him in person. He was a fantastic host and I don't think we missed a blade of grass in all of Dublin. I unfortunately did not run into Enya or Bono on that trip, but we did have a great time.
FINALLY, this year in February, Kieran visited me in Chicago and hopefully I returned the favor by ensuring that he did not miss a crack in the pavement. I also whisked him away to Madison and tried to articulate the natural beauty which existed just below the frozen tundra.
If you do not see Kieran under the bonnet of his 1976 Rolls Royce, then he'll surely be inside, tearing out some old plumbing, painting a room, or sanding the floors.
We don't see each other often enough, but I intend to remedy that by increasing my travels in the upcoming months. Kieran is among the kindest, good-hearted and loyal friends I have, so consider this page my shrine to him.
